What this site is
Greece for Americans is a planning site for Americans taking a first trip to Greece: Athens, the Cyclades and Crete. It answers the questions a first-timer actually has, in the order the trip forces them: which islands, in what order, for how many nights, on which boat, and what any of it costs in dollars. Every page is written to be acted on, not browsed.
How a fact gets on the page
A figure that can change, a fare, a rule, an opening hour, is held in one place and checked against its source on a schedule. When you see a number set in the typewriter voice with a dotted line under it, that is a checked fact, with its source and the date it was last read. When a source cannot be found, the number is not printed. The full list of what each article rests on, with dates, is on the sources page.
The marks
The decision manual that grows out of this site marks every hard fact for how much weight it can bear: established for geography and orderings that hold for years, official for a published rule, surveyed for our own dated observation, our call for a judgment you are free to argue with, and volatile for a live figure that lives on a dated field sheet instead. The site follows the same discipline without the typography.
What we refuse to do
- Name a hotel as the answer. A named hotel is stale within a season. The decision of which area to sleep in, and why, is what lasts.
- Print a price as a promise. Ranges, dated, with the thing that moves them named.
- Sell you fear. No countdowns, no scarcity. When a page tells you what goes wrong, it is after it has told you what to do.
- Launder other people’s ratings. You get the reasoning to make your own call.
How the site is paid for
Two ways, both disclosed on the page where they happen. Some links to ferries, hotels and tours are affiliate links, marked as such; booking through them costs you nothing extra. And the site sells one thing of its own, the decision manual Greece, in Order., built from the same reporting and sold with its pages shown first. The disclosures page has the detail.
